Back to Normal

My period of confinement to my room has ended. My daily schedule has returned to normal (normal for this lockdown, I mean). Happily, my trip to the emergency room did not expose me to the virus. Trevor and Alistair are okay as well. We can all breathe a sigh of relief. I walked in the garden today for the first time in ages. It was so very pleasant to feel the sunshine on my face after so long.

Serializing a New Novel

On the recommendation of my friend Princess Talaguit, I have joined Wattpad.com, where I am currently publishing a historical novel chapter by chapter as I write the story. It is illustrated, and it is free to read online. As of today, the first 5 chapters of Cries in her Sleep (or Tribulations and Triumphs of Kiowa Artist Dolores Hummingbird) are posted. This is my first venture into self-publishing. Unfortunately, that means I don't have an editor. I'l...

Princess Talaguit

I have a new pen pal. Her name is Princess Talaguit. Really. Princess is her actual name, not a title. She is from the Philippine province of Bicol. We have been Facebook friends for several month, but only recently did we start spending hours upon hours exchanging confidences online. I am always thrilled when I see that she has left me a message, and I hurry to answer it.

We became acquainted through a mutual friend, and then ever so gradually...

Bathroom Sounds

I have never been afflicted with undue modesty or paralyzing shyness.  I am not easily embarrassed, but occasionally I might flirt a little on the sly by pretending to social awkwardness or to discomfort that I do not actually feel. I suppose that makes me a pretty naughty girl, but the guys love it, and I like to please.

My bedroom in my grandfather's house has its own bathroom, which is situated directly beside my cousin Trevor's bathroom.  If Trevor ...

Benjamin York

I’ve been chatting with Benjamin online today. We’ve never done that before. He is one of the few friends to whom I have given my grandparents’ phone number. Since my arrival here a couple of months back, we’ve enjoyed long-distance conversations two or three times a week. After hearing about my accident, he tried to call and was told that I could not come to the phone because I was in quarantine, confined to my room for two weeks. So he mad...

Woe is me!

Exeter, Devon, England

I’m all beat up. I feel as if I’ve been run over by a bus. I have six stitches in my lower lip, my right arm is in a cast, and I have cuts and bruises all over my body, no concussion though. So I guess things are not so bad as they could be.

Hearing a great hullabaloo from outside, I climbed up into a window well in my bedroom, trying to see what was going on just beyond the hedge at the back of the garden.  Unable to determine what all the commot...

My Friend Mark Roden

Of all the people I chat with online, Mark Roden is the nicest and most engaging.  He is an artist and fine-art photographer in Houston, Texas. I have been to his studio on a couple of occasions, but long before I got to know him on Facebook; so I didn’t bother to introduce myself. I wish I had. Mark always has interesting things to share, and he makes amusing and intelligent comments on my posts. Nor has he ever hit on me or made requests for nude self...

Aunt Daphne

My father’s youngest sibling, my Aunt Daphne, still lives at home with her parents. I don’t know exactly how old she is, but her age is closer to my own than to Daddy’s. I think she must have been a late-in-life surprise blessing for my grandparents. Daphne is quite comely, but she’s strange. She hardly ever speaks, but keeps entirely to herself. I used to think she didn’t like me. Now, I believe that she is just painfully shy and somewhat...

Weather Threat

I understand that, over Guatemala right now, there is a tropical depression trying to gather itself into a tropical storm. The name it has been given is Cristobal. Its projected path takes it toward Houston by next Sunday evening. I am quite concerned for all my friends there, lest this depression becomea not just a tropical storm but a hurricane. I am especially worried for Percy and Xiomara, who have, in the last few years, become as dear to me as my ...

My Grandfather Ashe

Grandfather Ashe has rather rigid ideas about what is proper and prudent. Mind you, he is very tolerant of my liberal values, my somewhat unconventional lifestyle, my posing nude for artists, my voracious sexual appetite, and even of my occasional daliences with other girls. But because I never sleep in and always show up for breakfast on time, I am solid in his books. It’s killing me though. There being only one computer in this house for ten peopl...

Sexual Attraction

I don’t know exactly what it is that makes me attracted to some men and not to others. I admire good looks, of course, but good looks alone won’t do it for me. What I do know for sure is that certain things turn me off completely: stupidity, cruelty, insensitivity, prejudicial hatred, and over-inflated egos. Once I have seen evidence of any of these faults in a man, he has no chance with me whatever.

At age 16, I was much less discerning. I’d ...

An Embarrassing Moment

My cousin Giles, who is not yet 16 years old, knocked on my bedroom door this morning.

Yeah?” I answered, meaning “Who is it?”

Giles interpreted my response to mean “Come in,” and he promptly did so.

Completely topless, I had a knit shirt in my hands about to put it on. Giles was mortified. He blushed and stammered an excuse, tried to retreat, but couldn't seem to find the doorknob.

I quickly slipped the shirt on over my head and reass...
